I’ve been working as a film director for more than 14 years, ever since I graduated from the Dutch Film Academy in 2006. I made my first dance film together with the National Ballet and have always been very interested in modern dance. I love the way dance tells a story through movement, knowing that movement and film have been connected ever since the Lumière brothers invented the film camera. The first film the brothers made was a shot of a moving train arriving at a station, and soon after they filmed Loie Fuller’s serpentine dance. I feel that film only exists with the grace of motion. Without it, it could just as well be a picture. In dance, movement also is the key element of telling a story. When you put the two art forms together you create a very powerful combination of storytelling. I’ve directed many dance films, all well received on the festival circuit. One of them, Platform 13, was selected for more than 70 festivals worldwide and won about 12 awards. Schooled in the documentary tradition, I always address social issues. My last two films were about segregation in the Dutch school system and young people in debt. I always aim at sparking a debate or initiating social change in the subjects I address. My documentaries have been shown at festivals such as IDFA, TIFF and Prix Europa. Besides directing I also run my own production company Blackframe and I work as a dance film workshop instructor for Cinedans.

Q

A Mail Questionnair to Dance Film Directors

Q
I found it very interesting how the film seemed to have an objective sense of distance with the people appearing in it. Would you please tell us why you decided to make a dance film about migration? Was there any personal experience that inspired you?

A:Antonello Matarazzo
Actually, the tango is, more than any other, the popular dance that is most affected by cultural contaminations of all kinds. If you think about it, you can realize that there are no people in the world who do not carry within themselves the genes of millennia of transformations produced by commercial exchanges, by wars, conquests, migrations and crossings between different ethnic groups. In my opinion, tangueros’ attitude, as well as music, show evidence of those roots. This is the reason why tango seemed to me the most appropriate metaphor to talk about the ineluctable and unstoppable phenomenon which migration is. What's more, ‘tango’ stands for ‘nostalgia’, reminding the ancient greek theme of returning home by the sea.

Q
Looking up the dictionary I found out the title Tres Pasos means "Three steps ahead" in Spanish. Is it about the steps done by the dancer in the film? What message does this title have?

A:Antonello Matarazzo
The title is borrowed from the original piece of music by Rocco De Rosa, they are three steps of an imaginary dance that in the film sound like "passage" or "breakthrough" - three decisive steps that make you cross a border or definitely change your life. I mean, it is as if space were transformed into time: on the one hand there is the past to which you hardly want to come back and on the other what the future is expected to be.  The step ahead deals with illusion, shipwreck, failure or dreams that will come true. It deals with the unknown we are made of.

Q

Q
It was a very playful film. Though your backgrounds are in the fine arts, you applied to our 'dance film' festival with this video. What made you decide to do so? What does dance mean to you?

A:Claudia Ungersbäck
Yes, I´m rooted in fine arts - classical drawing, printmaking and painting. The body in movement was always my preferred subject. My view on art is a performative - I perform with pens, cam´s, bushes or a copy machine. I even dance with my sewing machine. Art has more to do with dance, poetry or music than picturing something. Dance can be absolute freedom.

Q
You used the Latin word 'Copiare' for the title, not 'photocopy' itself, which plays an important role in this film. Why the Latin word? What is it referring to?

A:Claudia Ungersbäck
The film was my diploma in printmaking, I made an installative object - the film was built in a copy machine and the title was "animareprostalladuktion" which comes from anima - soul in Latin and Greek which is the basic meaning of animation- a floating graphic work. I made a version for cinema - lat. copiare. For me it was a more consequent decision to stay in original meanings of "copy" from the Latin word copiare - what means to picture the original text in the same way as the original as well as to picture or copy a sujet often an artwork. The discussions of art being copies of nature or performed copies of nature has a long tradition in European philosophy starting long before Platon, I found it interesting to animate a copy of a fact of nature in a way of translation in drawing and go further to produce original work in a classical sense -to go further than making a copy of nature.

Q

A

A

Q
I sensed some weightlessness or some focus towards gravity in the expression of this film. Maybe a similar sense was in your "Of Silence" too, the dance film our festival screened in 2019. What do you think? Do you consider this your artistic feature by any chance?

A
Dance Cinema can present choreography in a way it can never be experienced as a live performance. Prime reason is that a live dance performance is bound by the continuation of time and the reality of gravity. And even though a lot of ballet, which is the form of dance I work with most, is geared towards having dancers seemingly effortlessly defy gravity and making time stand still for audiences, dance as a medium is ephemeral and if a dancer jumps on stage he or she will still have to come down. Cinema as an art form, on the other hand, is both timeless as well as unbound by the limitations of gravity.
I started my career, over a decade ago, as a ballet photographer, where you capture a single moment of time, that one single moment where every part of a dancer’s body aligns to reach the pinnacle position of balletic perfection. In doing so, a photograph defies the temporal reality of dance by capturing one slice of choreography for eternity, for example with the dancer frozen in mid-air. I then became fascinated with what would be possible if a camera could continue to move while freezing this single moment, or if the dancer didn’t need to obey the laws of physics. In 2014 I made a film based on this idea, called Ballet Spiral, which was a sort of jumping off point for me in how I look at dance on film. My artistic journey in exploring dance through cinematography and exploring cinema through choreography, is definitely rich in experimentation with ridding dance of its real-life limitations. I try very hard to elevate dance to a cinematic level when creating Dance Cinema, as opposed to simply registering dance on camera.
In Dance Cinema, both the dancer and the camera are creative tools with which to give audiences an experience of dance they can not have inside a theater and time and gravity are interesting elements to use as tools for emotional and thematical exploration on film.

Q
One of our festival staff linked your film with "Solaris" by Andrei Tarkovsky. I, too, could feel some Sci-Fi like taste with this film. Do you agree? What kind of existence is the dancer representing in this piece?

A
I consider Tarkovsky to be one of the masters of the cinematic language. His theory of film as a mosaic of time has been very influential. Though I would point more towards Stalker, because there is a clear link between the visual esthetic of that Tarkovsky film and our film Exaltation. Mainly the monochromatic color scheme as well as some very long takes, allowing the audience to really soak up the image and giving it a more profound impact, unencumbered by edit. The absolutely stunning music by brilliant Russian composer Andrey Dergachev lends Exaltation an certain religious atmosphere, which is something that might be considered in line with the work of Tarkovsky as well. Sci-Fi films often explore the theme of Dystopia. Though I would not classify Exaltation as a Sci-Fi, there is definitely a dystopian feel to our film, with to the rugged location, the rubble and the dust, and our beautiful dancer as a sole figure within this brutal landscape. She seems fragile but exudes such power and energy, which is the core of the film. This gradual awakening of spirit and the emergence of sentience. The notion that a being can gradually rip itself away from a primitive state. The dancer in this case represents the Self, evolving into self-consciousness, and thus becoming aware of a higher order and no longer bound by the instinctive programming of the environment. In one word, Exaltation.

Q

Q
I found that Woyo is an ethnic group and/or culture in Africa. Is this the meaning of the film title? Are the people in the market Woyo people?

A:Agnès Quillet
Woyo means "Flow" in the Bamabra language (the majority language in the south of the country)
The film is called WOYO because the dance here is not cut off from life. It is not presented in a determined and closed space. It is free like water and adapts to the terrain. The film shows the experience of this movement, of this dance that is created every day in the constantly changing market.

Q
I am astonished to see this film on your project that many dancers have worked on for a long time. What does it mean to you to dance in a contemporary style in Bamako and the regions you live in?

A:Agnès Quillet
The film WOYO, follows the journey of young Malian dancers and international choreographers during three weeks of residencies in the markets of Bamako in Mali during the festival "Fila Ni Kélé - Bamako". The dancers followed a three-year training course in contemporary dance with the Don Sen Folo association. Contemporary dance is very little present in Mali. It only emerged in the year 2000. The population is used to seeing the traditional dance that gives rhythm to life (weddings, baptisms, traditional festivals). Each region and ethnic group has its own dances. This is why the "Fila Ni Kélé - Bamako" festival takes place in the markets, it makes contemporary creation accessible and educates the population about the work of the dancer. But young artists need to express themselves and young people need to see art that speaks to them and touches them.  If we want to create vocations, we must show that it is possible and that we can make a living from it. Don Sen Folo has been working for more than ten years in the field of contemporary dance in Bamako, but there is still a lot of work to be done, especially in the regions, as Mali is a very large country.
