The annual International Dance Film Festival screens the selected dance films by the festival curator out of over 150 entries from around the world. Here, we asked some questions to directors who created the selected dance films. What made you make this film? Meaning of the title? Where did you film this picture? Who is this dancer? etc. A Q&A good to read both before and after you see the films.

Q1

Q1
Please tell us about you, and what kind of films you have made in the past.

I consider myself a “Screen dance” filmmaker, specifically addressing social and political themes. I graduated from San Francisco State University film school, a very social activist school where we studied mainly art and experimental films. I grew up in the sixties and seventies in the San Francisco Bay Area during the civil rights era, so I think it’s just in my blood to express my social and political views in an artistic form.

Q2
I could tell the icons in the background are representing America and its history. On the other hand, how is the music and the dance, representing America?

Actually, some of the icon images of the immigrants in the background in the beginning of the film are photos of my actual relatives who immigrated here from Ireland, England and Germany. I selected Maurice Ravel’s “Bolero” for the music only because it has a strong progression to move the story forward. It starts out slow and builds to a climatic moment. That seem to work well for the progression of America. To be honest, I was not happy with the choreography. It does not match the story very well. I take full responsibility for that. We should have spent more time on the choreography.

Q3
Why did you decide to make a dance film with this theme? Where did your idea begin?

I love this country and wanted to express what is good and positive about America. To many filmmakers focus on what is bad or negative. We’ve seen plenty of those kinds of films.

Q4
This is a very unique piece with ballet dancers dancing with a virtual background. Is there anything you consulted for this method?

Not really. I just try to approach my films in a unique visual style. I like to give the audience something different to experience. We’ve already seen thousands of dance films shot in some abandoned warehouse, rooftop or beach setting. Very boring and uninspired. For me, film is an art form, not just a way to capture dance.

Q5
How does the American people react to this film?

The film has done extremely well in the US. Although, I’ve noticed that a lot of Eastern European countries love this film. It won “Best Film” at the Dance Theater Festival in Poland.
