舞踏家。クリスチャンであり、戦争経験を経て、その生涯をダンスに捧げた。独自のダンススタイルを「Butoh」として世界に広めた。

Butoh dancer. Christian. After experiencing WW2, Ohno devoted his life to dance. He introduced the unique dance style “Butoh” to the world.

大野一雄は舞台での踊りを一時休止し映画制作に没入した。大野一雄にとっての「孤独」の中で作られた映画であるが、長野千秋との奇跡的な出会いによって３本の映画が生まれた。1969年「O氏の肖像」、1971年「O氏の曼陀羅」、1973年「O氏の死者の書」。脚本はなく、大野と長野は即興的に撮影し、編集は長野に任されたようで、撮ったものをなるべく残したそうだ。
今回配信する「O氏の曼陀羅」の中で、クリスチャンである大野一雄は様々な宗教を飛び越えて、自らの信仰を映像に残したようにも見える。映画とは、孤独でもあり自由でもあることを教えてくれる。
Kazuo Ohno once suspended his career as a stage performer to immerse himself in producing films. Though Ohno was in his days of solitude, a miraculous encounter with Chiaki Nagano led to the birth of three dance films; "Portrait of Mr.O" (1969), "Mandala of Mr.O" (1971), and "Mr.O's Book of the Dead" (1973). There was no script, so Ohno and Nagano filmed improvisationally, and Nagano was in charge of the editing while he cared to utilize as much of the materials.
With "Mandala of Mr.O" it seems that Ohno Kazuo, a Christian, marked his beliefs by referring to different religions in the film.One could see the freedom and isolation of filmmaking.
