Q

Q
I read your comment that you made this piece thinking of the stage productions canceled during the Corona pandemics. What does stage or live performance mean to you? Did you have any dilemma making this video work and not a live performance?

A: Akino Yokoyama
As an audience, a live performance is where you can feel the spirit of the people, vibration of the air, or particles of light. It's a connection between audience and performer, but more than that, it's about being there together.
For each moment of a performance, a great time and effort are put in by the artists. But it is something only for those who are there to experience it.
They are like fireworks, dance performances in particular.

I'm not eager to make documentaries of live performances, but I have always been interested in film. So I think different of dance films and live performances.

I am concerned about the video being able to be skipped when watched on different devices. While having the advantage of being able to rewind and watch a specific scene repeatedly, (if not seen in the cinema) the audience could have less focus. An online screening could not specify the size of the screen, the surrounding environment, and the sound volume. This was a big dilemma for me. Being the first dance film I made, I had these thoughts to myself.

Q
I was impressed by the seamless dance and also the animation. What can you tell us about the animation? Can you say that the animation is also dancing? Is there a master-subordinate relationship between animation and dance?

A: Akino Yokoyama
The interesting thing about animation is that it moves in a way that a real person could never do.
I draw the animation myself by hand. Drawing the movements for the animation was similar to the process of choreographing. But in dance, no matter how precise the movements are, it cannot be perfect because the dancer is not a machine. Even when it is done perfectly, coincidence makes the dance look different from the original intent. In contrast, with animation, you have to draw with specific intention to get the right movement. I found this very interesting.

Initially, I planned animation to be just floating around, but now I see it dancing.
I'm not a professional in animation, so I couldn't move them as I wanted to. So in a way, I never predicted the outcome. It was as if these drawings were dancing with their own will.
There wasn't much of a master-subordinate relationship. I was thinking about the timeline of dance and animation mixed together. The most prominent thing I was thinking about was the Yokohama Red Brick Warehouse, the theatre we filmed in. I didn't want to forget that the theatre was empty, with all the performances canceled.

Q
『Blue/Orange』

Q
Thank you for submitting "Blue/Orange" to our dance film festival. Would you please tell us why this work is a dance film for you as an artist?

A: Tomoki Yamakawa
Physicality is an important factor in many of my films. In "Blue/Orange", a scene expresses an impulse by combining the fire festival and dance. I am convinced that this expression could be only be achieved through filming dance. Blue and orange. Water and fire. Summer and winter. Stillness and movement. The motifs are based on various opposites, but the energetic power of dance was essential to express the energy of the movement.

Q
The film is only 5 minutes long, but my impression is that there is a continuous stream of slow-moving air. I am interested in the expression of the camera constantly moving or wavering. What was your intention and how did you create this effect of slow-moving air?

A: Tomoki Yamakawa
I filmed all scenes with a hand-held camera, which produced the wavering effect. I did this because I wanted to shoot it like a documentary.
Also, the aspect ratio of this film is 4:3, but I shot it in 16:9 and changed it to 4:3 when editing. 4:3 felt right because 4:3 is closer than 16:9 to the range of focus in a person's vision when looking at something intently. I think 4:3 fits because I was shooting from a personal point of view, facing the subject. I believe that human beings are part of nature. It's easy to forget when you're busy living your everyday life, but there's slow-moving air when you feel nature. The idea is reflected in my film.

Q

A Mail Questionnair to Dance Film Directors

Interview : Mizuhito Kuroda

Q
The film begins in a place like a workshop. I felt a sense of life that only the natives could know, scenery connected to everyday life. It was like seeing foreign films. Where is that workshop-like place? Why did you start your work from that place?

A: Daizo Okauchi
The theme of this work is "prayer". We started with a sense of awe and disbelief in the word "prayer". In our modern world based on science, prayer is a word that has lost its presence and sometimes seen as inefficient. But when I think about it, there are no ethnic groups that didn't practice praying. It is something people always need, like food, clothing, and shelter. Perhaps it is part of our instinct as a survival strategy. And if it is was an instinct, I wanted to rethink the effects and possibilities of prayer.
That place is the residence of a modeling artist in a fishing town. He rented one corner of a warehouse belonging to a retailer. He lives with his cat, sleeping behind a thin partition. We shot the film there. What is interesting about this place is that it's still used as a warehouse while he lives in it. A private and semi-public space at the same time, some sculptures and books there belong to no one. In other words, the memories and information of an unspecified number of people are there unorganised. This is a metaphor for a modern mind, where information is scattered and anxiety is always there. In our modern society, we tend to lose our imagination towards things we cannot see. I first photographed that space as a place where I could express the connection between our society and prayer.

Q
A spectral or divine presence dance around in the second half of your work, 'Inorino/Perspective Folktale'. What kind of beings are they? What kind of facts and research have you gone through to create this character?

A: Daizo Okauchi
To create this film, I interviewed Muslims, Buddhist monks, Christians, Shinto priests, Hindus, and others who pray daily on their thoughts on "prayer". The monk who has been praying for the Fukushima nuclear power plant since the Great East Japan Earthquake on 2011.3.11 used the word "preparedness" to describe his prayers. Another monk said that the prayer was "an ideal world without discrimination or class, hidden from those in power". The Muslims used the word "praising God", but I could see that their prayers enhanced their love towards their fellows and family. The Shinto priest said "peaceful world" and "showing gratitude towards gods and ancestors". This piece is based on such information and came out of a dialogue with Chisato Katata and Shinsuke Inoue. Chisato Katata came up with the costumes and choreography, and Shinsuke Inoue, the photographer, edited and prepared it into a film. In Katata's words, the divine presence in the film "seems to be a collection of prayers, but it is nothing in itself, just like a crystal ball of a fortuneteller". The creation of a world of prayer begins when the green creature representing death, life and cries, approaches the dimension of the white being.
Through creating this work, I have sensed that all the prayers share a goal and are universal. So what is this goal? I expressed it visually in the last scene.

ARICA was founded in 2001 by director Yasuki Fujita, poet and critic Shino Kuraishi, and actor Tomoko Ando. ARICA is known as a unique physical theater that invites dancers, actors, musicians, and artists as guests for each work, and interacts with creative work in art, music, and design, while focusing on solo performance. The company often performs in site-specific spaces, taking into consideration the characteristics of the space, and opens up new horizons of physical expression through live performances that resonate with the body and the introduction of mechanical devices. The video "Mimesis" was created in collaboration with the dancer Takao Kawaguchi and the filmmaker Noriko Koshida, based on a scene from the stage piece "Mimesis" to be performed in December 2021.

Q

Q
The word "mimesis" in the title is an essential philosophical term, meaning imitation in Greek. What did you have in mind when you created this piece?

A: Yasuki Fujita (Director of ARICA)
Since ancient times, mimesis has been an enormous theme and one of the most important ideas, especially in artistic expression. Shino Kuraishi, a poet and critic, has been involved with ARICA since our foundation. He introduced the word mimesis to us. With Takao Kawaguchi, recognised for his dance performances imitating Kazuo Ohno, we focused on the role of physical mimesis on stage. Training of the body is based on "kata" or style, imprinted on the body through repetitive training. "Kata" is important in gymnastics, martial arts like Judo and Karate, and even traditional practices such as the tea ceremony. Or, on a national scale, discipline and training are sometimes desired for efficiency, to form a "useful body". This film presents a fictional workshop where misaligned body movements are handed down as a new "kata". Eventually, the relationship between "teaching and learning" becomes vague, and a new signification deviating from "usefulness" emerges.

Q
What specific instructions were given to the performers in the creation?

A: Yasuki Fujita (Director of ARICA)
I created this piece with two performers with many years of experience on stage. I trust their imagination and their passion for expressing their images. I gave them a general direction based on the text, talked to them repeatedly, respected their autonomy and gradually made the scenes through rehearsals. As a director, I think it is essential to understand the space, listen to the sound and voices, and see their bodies correctly as they work. This film is from a scene of a stage piece, 'Mimesis', which we are creating. We entrusted it to the filmmaker Noriko Koshida, who directed it as a cinematic piece. As the one-way relationship between teaching and being taught gradually goes away, the images of the characters overlap in mimesis, the imitation.
